Beer League Fantasy Hockey FAQ
What is beer league fantasy hockey?
Beer league fantasy hockey lets you draft real players from your adult rec or beer league into fantasy teams. Instead of picking NHL stars, you're drafting your buddies — the guys and gals you actually play with. Points are scored based on real game stats tracked in RocketHockey, and you compete head-to-head against other fantasy managers in your league each week.
How does the fantasy draft work?
RocketHockey uses a snake draft format. The draft order reverses each round so no one gets stuck with a bad position. The league commissioner sets the draft date and time, and everyone joins the live draft lobby. If someone can't make it, auto-pick AI drafts the best available player based on position needs. You can also set a pre-draft ranking to guide the AI.
How are fantasy points scored?
Scoring is fully customizable by the league commissioner. Default scoring gives 3 points for goals, 2 for assists, 1 for each PIM, and goalie stats like wins (5 pts) and shutouts (3 pts). Beer league bonuses like attendance points (1 pt) and Gordie Howe hat tricks (5 pts) can be enabled for extra fun.
Can I make trades with other managers?
Yes! RocketHockey supports peer-to-peer trade proposals. You select players to send and receive, add an optional message, and submit the offer. The other manager can accept, reject, or counter. Accepted trades go through a league-wide veto window where other managers can vote to block unfair deals.
What are FAAB waivers?
FAAB stands for Free Agent Acquisition Budget. Each fantasy manager gets a season-long budget (e.g., $100) to bid on free agent players. Bids are blind — you don't see what others bid. The highest bidder wins the player. This prevents the fastest-refreshing manager from grabbing every good player and adds budget strategy to the game.
Is this included in the $25/mo price?
Yes! Fantasy hockey is included in every RocketHockey plan at no extra cost. The $25/mo League plan includes full fantasy features — drafts, matchups, trades, waivers, and standings. There are no add-on fees or per-team charges for fantasy.
What's the difference between fun and classic mode?
Classic mode uses standard fantasy terminology — Roster, Waivers, Free Agents, Standings. Fun mode renames everything with beer league flavor — your roster becomes "Your Crew," waivers become "Last Call," the draft is "The Pour," and standings are "Tap Standings." The features are identical; only the labels change. Each league picks their vibe.
How many teams can be in a beer league fantasy league?
Fantasy leagues support 4 to 16 teams. The sweet spot for most beer leagues is 6-10 teams, which ensures enough players to go around while keeping matchups competitive. The system automatically generates the weekly schedule based on the number of teams.
How does beer league fantasy hockey scoring work?
RocketHockey offers 4 built-in scoring presets tailored for beer league play. Standard mode is balanced across all positions. Beer League Chaos makes goals worth 5 points and own goals cost -6. Goon Bonus rewards enforcers with +8 for fighting majors and +3 for misconducts. Goalie Survival Mode boosts saves to 0.3 each and shutouts to +10. Every preset is fully customizable by your commissioner.
Can I customize fantasy scoring for my beer league?
Absolutely. Start with any of the 4 presets — Standard, Beer League Chaos, Goon Bonus, or Goalie Survival Mode — and adjust individual point values. Your commissioner controls goal, assist, PIM, save, shutout, attendance, and bonus point values. New categories like own goals, misconducts, and ejections are also available for leagues that want to get creative.
What are fantasy prop bets in beer league hockey?
Prop bets are weekly side wagers your commissioner creates for bonus fantasy points. Examples: "Will Bob score 2+ goals this week?" or "Will there be a shutout Tuesday night?" Every fantasy manager picks yes or no before the deadline. Correct picks earn bonus points (default +5). It adds another layer of fun beyond the standard matchup.
How does the Joker Card work?
The Joker Card is a catch-up mechanic for losing teams. After each weekly matchup, the losing team receives a random challenge for one of their starters — like "Score 1+ goal" or "Record 15+ saves." If the player hits the target the following week, the team earns 10 bonus points. It keeps every team engaged even during losing streaks.
