Scoring & Stats
Learn how to enter game scores, record player statistics, understand standings calculations, and use leaderboards.
Entering Game Scores
- Navigate to the game you want to score from the Schedule tab or the Scores page.
- Click "Enter Score" to open the scoresheet.
- Enter the final score for each team. For hockey, you can also mark overtime (OT) or shootout (SO) wins.
- Optionally enter period-by-period scores for a more detailed breakdown.
- Add penalty minutes (PIM) per team if your league tracks them.
- Click "Submit" to save the score. Standings update automatically.
- Team captains can also submit scores if you enable captain score reporting in league settings.
Pro tip: Enable "Score Confirmation" in league settings to require both team captains to confirm the score before it becomes official.
Recording Player Statistics
- After entering the game score, click "Add Player Stats" to record individual statistics.
- For each player, record goals (G), assists (A), and the system calculates points (P) automatically.
- Optionally track additional stats: penalty minutes (PIM), plus/minus (+/-), shots on goal (SOG), and saves (SV).
- Goalie stats are tracked separately: saves, goals against, shots faced, and save percentage are calculated automatically.
- Stats roll up to player profiles showing season totals, per-game averages, and career stats across seasons.
- Player stats are displayed on the public league website in sortable leaderboard tables.
Pro tip: Stats entry is included free with every RocketHockey plan — no add-on fees like some competitors charge.
Understanding Standings Calculations
- Standings are calculated automatically based on game results. No manual updates needed.
- Default point system: Win = 2 points, Loss = 0 points, Tie = 1 point, OT Loss = 1 point.
- You can customize the points system in League Settings > Standings (e.g., 3 points for a win).
- Tiebreaker rules are applied automatically: head-to-head record, then goal differential, then goals for.
- You can customize the tiebreaker order in league settings.
- Division standings and overall standings are displayed separately on the public website.
- Playoff seeding is determined by final standings and your configured tiebreaker rules.
Pro tip: The standings page updates in real-time as soon as a game score is submitted — no waiting for batch updates.
Customizing the Points System
- Go to League Settings > Standings to customize how points are awarded.
- Set point values for: regulation win, regulation loss, overtime win, overtime loss, shootout win, shootout loss, and tie.
- Common hockey configurations: NHL-style (2-0-1 OTL), 3-point system (3-1-0), or traditional (2-1-0).
- Changes to the points system retroactively recalculate all standings for the current season.
- You can set different points systems for different leagues within the same organization.
- Bonus points can be configured for shutouts or high-scoring games if desired.
Pro tip: Most adult rec leagues use the standard 2-0-1 (OTL) system. Youth leagues often use a simpler 2-1-0 system.
Player Leaderboards and Awards
- Player leaderboards are generated automatically from game stats.
- Default leaderboard categories: Points, Goals, Assists, Penalty Minutes, Plus/Minus.
- Goalie leaderboards: Save Percentage, Goals Against Average, Wins, Shutouts.
- Leaderboards are displayed on the public league website and update after each game.
- End-of-season awards can be tracked based on final leaderboard positions.
- Players can view their own stats and ranking on their player profile page.
- Export leaderboard data as CSV for end-of-season awards ceremonies or social media posts.
Pro tip: Share leaderboard screenshots on your league's social media pages to boost player engagement.
